BATTLE CREEK — Motorists can expect intermittent closures on I-94 at Capital Avenue this weekend as crews begin setting beams for the new Capital Avenue bridge over the interstate.

During beam setting, westbound I-94 will be reduced to one lane and routed on the Capital Avenue ramps, MDOT officials said in a release. Westbound travelers will not be able to access northbound Capital Avenue at the ramps and will instead need to use Helmer Road Exit 95.

Eastbound I-94 will also be reduced to one lane during beam setting, and there will be police-assisted intermittent 10- to 15-minute total closures as beams are set.

The contractor plans to do this work overnight, from about 8 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday. If the contractor needs more time, the same changes will be implemented Saturday night into Sunday morning. Access will be maintained to all businesses during the project, MDOT officials said.

Northbound Capital Avenue and Beckley Road will remain open during beam setting. There will be intermittent 5- to 10-minute closures with flaggers on Capital Avenue and Beckley Road to get the beams into the work zone.

Southbound Capital Avenue will not be able to access ramp to westbound I-94 and will have to follow the posted detour to access westbound I-94 at Helmer Road.

The new Capital Avenue bridge is expected to be complete Sept. 23, MDOT indicated in July. The work is part of MDOT’s three-year, $160 million project to repave 10 miles of I-94 between Helmer Road and 17 1/2 Mile Road, rebuild nine bridges and repair six others.
