A frenzy of memes of former President Donald Trump’s mug shot flooded the internet in the hours after he turned himself in to authorities in Fulton County, Georgia, with some comparing Trump’s apparent death stare to movie villains and a medieval dictator.

Memes on X, formerly known as Twitter, have compared Trump’s stare-down in his mug shot to the iconic glare among villains in Stanley Kubrick thrillers, including in A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Full Metal Jacket, as well as to the teenage bully in Pixar’s Toy Story.

Other memes posted on X show Trump’s mug shot side-by-side with a painting of medieval tyrant Vigo Von Homburg Deutschendorf, better known as Vigo the Cruel, whose menacing stare featured prominently in Ghostbusters II.

People online have also targeted Trump’s 18 co-defendants in the case, with some memes comparing the group of former Trump attorneys and aides to the members of the Roy family in HBO’s Succession, as well as to the three-by-three grid of faces in the intro to The Brady Bunch.

People online have also altered Trump’s face, including one styled with a sweeping blonde hairdo to resemble Owen Wilson, while others compared his stare to Ben Stiller’s so-called blue steel pose from Zoolander, as well as to Lindsay Lohan’s mug shot after the actress was charged with reckless driving in 2013.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), an outspoken Trump critic, posted a meme of former President Barack Obama unveiling a blown-up official presidential portrait of Trump’s mug shot.

Anti-Trump political action committee The Lincoln Project posted a video of the Nickelback music video for “Photograph”—a song that’s generated a slew of memes of its own—with a framed mug shot photo, as well as another of Trump’s mug shot embedded over former First Lady Melania Trump’s dress.

One video from the Lincoln Project shows a digitally-altered video of fans at a bar appearing to celebrate the photo of Trump as it was released on CNN—the original video showed a crowded bar playing video of England’s win over Wales at the 2016 UEFA European Football Championship.

Trump has also taken advantage of the photo on his campaign store, where people can buy $23 “NEVER SURRENDER!” t-shirts with the former president’s mug shot, as well as a mug shot coffee mug for $25, a beer koozie for $15 or a bumper sticker for $12—Trump also rebranded his first indictment of the year—over charges stemming from alleged hush money payments—with merchandise on his campaign store, including a “NOT GUILTY” t-shirt and mug with a fake mug shot and the date of his surrender in Manhattan.

Trump posted his mug shot from the Fulton County, Georgia, courtroom in his first post on X since January 2021, writing: “ELECTION INTERFERENCE. NEVER SURRENDER!” Trump had been suspended from the platform, then known as Twitter, days after the January 6 Capitol insurrection “due to the risk of further incitement of violence.” His suspension was lifted in November after billionaire Elon Musk closed on his $44 billion deal to buy the platform, though in the time since then, Trump has instead chosen to stay silent on X while promoting his own rival social media platform, Truth Social.

Trump was arrested and quickly released on a $200,000 bond from Fulton County jail late Thursday after he was indicted on 13 criminal counts over his alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, including charges of racketeering, solicitation of violation of oath by a public official, conspiracy to commit forgery, false statements and conspiracy to impersonate a public officer.

The former president faces arraignment on the week of September 5.
